Description | Calcitonin Monoclonal Antibody (4-5). Calcitonin (CT) is a polypeptide hormone known to act primarily on bone, and to have effects on the renal and gastrointestinal systems. It is secreted by the ultimobranchial gland of birds and fish, and by the thyroid gland in mammals. Salmon CT is used therapeutically to inhibit bone resorption, particularly in patients with Paget's disease and osteoporosis. Salmon CT appears to have essentially the same actions as mammalian CT, but has shown to have greater potency and longer lasting effects. |
