The ADM gene encodes for a preprohormone, which is posttranslationally modified to generate 2 biologically active peptides: adrenomedullin and proadrenomedullin N-terminal 20 peptide (PAMP). Expression of these peptides is widespread, and they have several functions, including vasodilatation, bronchodilatation, hormone secretion regulation, growth modulation, angiogenesis promotion, and antimicrobial activity, among others.
