| Description | CCR6 is the only defined receptor for CCL20. Therefore, CCL20 expressed by epithelial cells during infection recruits immature CCR6+ dendritic cells (DC). After, these cells down-regulate CCR6 expression and up-regulate CCR7 as they migrate to nearby lymph nodes. CCL20 competes for receptor binding to CCR6 with β-defensins -1 and -2, and other cationic antimicrobial peptides in mice and humans. Interestingly, CCL20 itself possesses potent antimicrobial activity.CCL20/CCR6 interactions play an important role in the pathogenesis of encephalomyelitis and psoriasis in animal models of chronic inflammatory skin disorders. CCL20 is abundantly found in psoriatic plaques characterized by epidermal hyperproliferation and immunocyte infiltration. The production of CCL20 by keratinocytes could be an initial trigger for Th17 activation and a key component in maintaining the self-perpetuating cycle of Th17 activation in psoriasis. |
